The short answer: If a faucet gives only a trickle in freezing weather, suspect a frozen pipe. Keep the faucet open, find the frozen section and warm it gently with a hair dryer, heating pad or hot wet towels. Never use a torch or open flame. If you can't find it, can't reach it or can't thaw it, call a licensed plumber. If a pipe has burst, shut off the main water valve first.
Safety first. Never thaw a pipe with a torch or any open flame. They are a fire hazard and can release deadly carbon monoxide. Keep electrical cords away from water, and stay out of rooms where water is near outlets, panels or appliances.

Common questions

How do I know if my pipe is frozen?

The Red Cross says that if you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places are against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.

What temperature do pipes freeze at?

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension says water pipes have the potential to freeze and burst when the outside temperature reaches 20°F or below. Exposed or poorly protected pipes are the most vulnerable.

Can I thaw a frozen pipe myself?

Often, with gentle heat. The Red Cross says to keep the faucet open and apply heat with a heating pad, hair dryer, space heater kept away from flammables, or hot wet towels. Never use a torch or any open flame. Call a licensed plumber if you cannot find, reach or thaw the frozen section.

What temperature should I keep my house at to prevent frozen pipes?

The Red Cross says to keep the thermostat at the same setting day and night, and if you are away in cold weather, to leave the heat on and set no lower than 55°F.
